I named it for the half of the motto we stopped finishing. Out of many. Then a seam of red where the one should be.
I built the field first. Layer after layer of near black and cold charcoal until the surface went quiet and flat, the kind of dark that absorbs a room instead of bouncing it back. Then I opened it. I worked the paint into a single diagonal fault and pushed the edges up into real ridges, thick enough to throw their own shadow across the canvas. The crimson sits down inside that break rather than on top of it. It reads as something that was always under the surface and finally showed.
The title is the part I want to be straight about. E Pluribus Unum means out of many, one. I left the second half off because the second half is the part we are still arguing about. The many is obvious here. It is right there in the torn edge, hundreds of separate ridges of paint, every one of them going its own direction. The one is what I could not finish painting.
I did not make this as a complaint. The seam is lit. Whatever is under there is still burning, and the fracture is the only reason you can see any of it. That felt more honest to me than a tidy symbol would have.
At 20 by 16 the texture is the thing a photograph cannot carry. Raking light across those ridges changes the piece through the day, and the black shifts from soft to nearly matte depending on where you stand. It hangs landscape, it is signed, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Why this piece works in a space
- A near black field with one line of red anchors a wall without competing with anything else in the room.
- The raised texture catches raking light, so the piece keeps changing through the day instead of sitting flat.
- Deep charcoal and crimson hold their own against warm wood, brass, black metal, and white plaster.
Best for: Offices, Above credenzas, Bedrooms, Healthcare spaces, Executive offices
